06: Thirty day game design challenge
A new 30 day challenge! What lies ahead? Read to find out
Alright, a new post! Whats this one about?
Its starting officially from tomorrow but beginning today, I am setting out a challenge for myself.
Each day, I will dedicate 1 hour to developing a game that you can play! (and then write a post about it every day)
Yes, you will get to see how a game is made (through my posts) and then actually test it out and provide feedback 😄(if you want to!)
Why
- I have always been interested in game design and have dabbled over the years. I want to actually show something for it now.
- I tend to experience most of my reality through the eyes of the mind. I see things in my mind above or before what I experience physically. This also means I can get lost in the thinking and planning and then when it comes time to start building, It can be an overwhelming task! So I see this as a way to focus on starting small and building something basic and functional.
What
Ok so I have been wanting to make games for a few years with Godot Engine. Did you know that Godot is the worst second largest open source software project by number of contributors? (The first being the Linux kernel)
So ill be making a game in Godot?
WRONG
Ill be making a game in pico-8!
This is much smaller engine for games... SO small in fact that each game file needs to fit into a 32Kb image and you have only 16 colors to work with! See the editor below
FYI there is a free web version you can try right now!

Seems cool right? SO why am I learning Pico-8 if I want to use Godot?
Well, there is definitely something to be said about "making small games". This is apparenly a movement that even has a manifesto.
I really like the idea behind this, which is "get out and do it!"
Also on the last post I made, it blends really nicely with the idea of scale. You dont need a machine with a GPU and 60 Gb of RAM and a 10GBe internet connection in order to have fun. You can get by with far far less.
It also goes along so smoothly with my favourite quotes on simplicity and design.
So yep! Thats about it. Im about to get into my first day and start making something.
I want to make the simplest game I can think of. I suppose that might be "pong" or "snake".
Message me on any game you think would be simple and fun! 😄
